“What’s the single best move for my abs?” is among my least favorite questions that I have been asked in my ten years of training. To me it symbolizes so much of what is wrong with the world of health and fitness today. You might as well have asked me what is the laziest, easiest, most short sighted way I can accomplish looking good this summer. That said, if that is what you wanted to ask, well then good for you. Unfortunately I do not have the answer to that rediculous question. I cannot train you. Most likely, I probably cannot be friends with you. Ha.
A major part of what I preach to all clients and anyone who wants to listen is that the core is the “sexy” word for muscles protecting and surrounding the spine. So if that’s the case then the primary goals for the core should be strength/flexibility. Then somewhere at the bottom of the list of core goals is aesthetics. That said, trust me when I say “I GET IT.” Everyone strives for a great looking midsection including myself. If i did not yield results that left my clients with a great looking core I would be back at JP Morgan making a lot more money. I have built many of programs that do not include a single crunch or sit up that yield an athletic, sexy, looking 6/8pack.
The following are my 5 favorite moves for developing core strength, flexibility, and with that comes the ever so popular core aesthetics.
1. Front Squat
2. Good Mornings
3. Weighted Triangle
4. Box Jumps
5. Sprints
Bonus Exercise: Put the spoon down.
